I saw a fairly recent photo where they were full, they just have a little residual water in them now.
I didn't get round to a full understanding, after a bit of thought I needed to go back and look.
One diagram showed a tap filling the top lock, it being a double flight which joins the two lower rivers by going over the hill. Maybe a stream was used.

In response to:From the River to the Canal

Those locks in the field are fascinating, would be fun to fill them one night.
Did you bring home the Phonolite? Must be able to use it somewhere, RF chokes perhaps. How about a piece hanging by your front door, saves on bell batteries. Maybe its like bakelite but just for phones.
We have come from the Tent world via Caravans to Campingcar.

Well I wrote an article for MMM some years ago with all the ins and outs of Solar and Wind. I may copy it on here it remains my intellectual property. Then you may quote from it at will if you wish.

Briefly I bought it prior to having Solar power nearly 10 years ago. At that time breaks were in the UK and had to be taken when time off was booked. I noted for several years that whilst the sun often did not show in the UK the wind blew even when the sun shone and at night too of course.

It produces around 5Amps in a reasonable breeze and 16 Amps in a gale. It is virtually noiseless, very little vibration when mounted on the van.

Economy wise of course like Solar the outlay is quite high, from then on all power is free. This causes me more annoyance with the trend for sites that have 'lectric laid on and you have tp pay for it even when you do not use it.

Of late I have used it less as we take breaks according to the weather and spend time in France, here we have a vast surplus of power from the Solar Panel and it is not worth erecting the Wind Genny. Despite this I always have it ready for the times when there is less power from the sun.

As part of a power package to be independent of mains supply I would recommend it. Maybe depending upon personal needs as a second to a 5 to 6 Amp Solar Panel

In response to:New Season

Hi,
When I blog I tend not to give precise locations do I. The reason? I have read too many lay-by by lay-by, by expensive camp site 'with a lovely pool' exact itineraries. They kill the sense of adventure IMHO.

The Forester is found on the D61 after Amboise (West of Tours) on the way to Montrichard about 4Km into the forest there is a sign 'Verger'.
No not the guy who looks after the Vicar, f.verger eng.orchard. In this case probably a forest fungi orchard, in season I think he may sell 'fruits of the forest'.

In response to:Wild Beasts of the Forest

Sounds amazing, Can you provide more details on the location would love to check this out :)

In response to:Medion Sat Nav

Hi Again, Just bought a little gizmo called a battery extender thats used if and when you have no supply to keep the battery topped up its on e bay look up battery extender charger mitec/mio 169 268 269 336 blue for the correct model for the medion 96800.
To reduce temptation we remove the sat nav and put it in a cupboard when we are stationary. Very often in the middle of the night the Medion will have switched itself on and an eerie glow will be seen around the cupboard door.
Likewise this has happened on the shelf at home.
Moral keep it plugged in or keep your eye on the little devils battery regularly.

In response to:Medion Sat Nav

Hi Steve
Yes, my sat nav spends a bit of time on the shelf, toward the end of last year it did go flat, flat. It can go flat and turn itself off OK but after that if the last bit of charge goes then it goes dumb.
No great problem Medion will re install from the SD card and all the personal data entered (including MP3) is stored on the SD so nothing is lost.
However if you have installed TomTom on it then you lose the Windows files added by you and I had to go over it all again.
However 'Aunties house' is still there as again personal data is on the SD.
